Waste Management

Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council has changed the way it collects and disposes of household waste in order to provide an integrated waste management service and to mange waste in a more sustainable way. The achievement of this will contribute to the provision of a healthier, cleaner environment and better quality of life for our present and future generations.

The Problem With Waste – It Costs The Earth

• In Neath Port Talbot we throw away about 1 tonne of rubbish per household every year. The amount of waste being generated by each and every one of us is growing every year, as our current trend is to buy more and more new products and quickly throw away items we no longer want.

• Some wastes produced are hazardous and contain toxic materials, such as paints, solvents and garden chemicals.

• Almost all domestic waste produced and collected in Neath Port Talbot was disposed of by burying it in the ground at landfill sites. Landfill sites take up valuable land space and the decomposing waste produces methane gas, the main greenhouse gas contributing to global warming and climate change. Household waste from Neath Port Talbot will no longer be disposed of this way and will be collected and taken to the new Materials Recovery and Energy Centre.

• Waste not only adds to the costs of organisations and households which produce it, it also uses up valuable, scarce, non-renewable natural resources and raw materials used to make most of the products and packaging we throw away.

• But, it needn’t be waste and needn’t be such a huge problem. We can all help and participate in protecting and improving the environment by preventing and reducing waste as much as possible, re-using goods we buy as much as possible and recycling waste materials NOW. Lets take responsibility and be part of the solution.
